Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), is a complex
problem affecting about 5% of school-aged children. APD is an umbrella term that describes a variety of
problems with the brain that can interfere with manner in which it processes sound.
APD can be a congenital or an acquired condition that causes difficulties in the processing of auditory
information within the central nervous system. APD can manifest as problems determining the direction of
sounds, difficulty perceiving differences between speech sounds, and the sequencing of sounds into meaningful words.
In a comparative study, scientists examined 312 children to determine if those with ADHD had APD.
It was found that significantly more ADHD children had APD than the children without ADHD.
How do you treat Auditory Processing Disorder?
In the early 1950s, Alfred A. Tomatis, an ear-nose-throat specialist, developed the Tomatis Method; a method
to improve learning and language abilities, communication, creativity, and social behavior. The Tomatis
Method has been used with thousands of children who have a variety of disorders including: autism, PDD,
attention disorders, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and sensory integration dysfunction. In addition, it has been
used with individuals who have auditory processing problems, communication disorders, learning disabilities,
developmental disorders, genetic disorders and motor-skill difficulties.
Tomatis' theories led to a multidisciplinary science called Audio- Psycho-Phonology (APP). APP
is a science that studies the connection between ear, voice, and psychology. It examines the functional,
social and psychological factors that effect listening, language, communications skills, motor control,
learning and over health. APP has also been called "auditory processing therapy."
The Tomatis Method is based on the idea that high frequency sounds give the brain energy, whereas, low
frequency sounds take energy away. Therefore, Tomatis referred to high frequency sounds as "charging
sounds." He believed that low frequency sounds tire us by making us move to the point of exhaustion.
Research suggests that autism is caused by neurodegeneration, and Tomatis believed that this degeneration
made certain sounds excruciatingly painful for autistic children. The Tomatis Method exercises and
relaxes the muscles in the inner ear, helping to resolve this pain. It has been used with autistic
children with excellent results. Another similar auditory processing program, The Listening Program,
has also been shown to be beneficial for autistic children.
